March 31, 2016The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department has many outreach programs as part of our external mission to serve the young people of the county. This video highlights three such programs. The Choice Program was developed to encourage children to respect themselves and others as they prepare for their futures. Uniformed officers visit schools and talk about such topics as self respect, bullying, peer pressure, CORI laws, civics and how their choices have consequences. Jail tours offer youngsters a look at the inside of a correctional facility and the opportunity to speak first–hand with an inmate. The Jail Brake Program is designed to give youngsters that are heading down the wrong path a realistic glimpse of life behind bars that is designed to “put the brakes” on the flow of young people into juvenile detention centers and ultimately adult jails.
