Chief Civil Deputy
The Civil Process Division is responsible for discharging Sheriff Tompkins’ statutory duty to serve all writs and precepts issued by judges in the Commonwealth. Over 40,000 times each year, the Civil Process Division’s staff assists litigants with business in the courthouses of Suffolk County by serving, executing and filing documents necessary to the defense or prosecution of a legal action.
An attorney since 1991, Joe worked as a victim–witness advocate in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office while attending law school at night. He served as a Law Clerk to the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court, then worked in private practice for twenty years, trying many cases in courts throughout the Commonwealth. In 2002, Joe served on the transition team, focusing on the Civil Process Division.
Joe earned his J.D. cum laude from Suffolk University and a B.A. in Mathematics from the College of the Holy Cross.
