
Sheriff Tompkins Opens Boston College Symposium on Race, Sports and Politics

July 3, 2025Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W Tompkins joined faculty, staff and students onstage for Roxbury Community College’s 49th Annual Commencement. Acting in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sheriff Tompkins addressed the assembly, along with RCC President Jonathan K. Jefferson, Dean of Students Lisa Carter and Vice President of Academic Affairs James Whitley. The Student Address was given by Kiara E. Rosario and the Commencement Address was delivered by Dr. Thea James, Vice President of Mission and Co-Executive Director of the Health Equity Accelerator at Boston Medical Center. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard presented the Colors, and this year’s honorees were Napoleon Jones-Henderson, weaver and multi-media artist; Gregory Saint-Dick, one of RCC’s Class of 2007, and higher education educator and mentor; and State Senator Liz Miranda. Athene Wilson performed both the National Anthem and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and recording artist Rebecca Zama performed her new musical work for the college, the “RCC Anthem.” Congratulations to RCC’s Class of 2025.
