SHERIFF TOMPKINS, DEPARTMENT HOST CEREMONY TO HONOR SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT RETIREES
Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department recently hosted a retirement ceremony for retirees of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department at Florian Hall in Dorchester.
The event was sponsored by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME – Council 93) Local 419, Local 3967, and Local 3643, the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE – Local 298), and the Jail Officers and Employees’ Association of Suffolk County (JOEASC).
The ceremony featured the presentation of the Colors by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s Honor Guard, the national anthem sung by Marchelle Jacques–Yarde, a welcome from Superintendent In–Chief Mike Harris who also thanked the unions for their sponsorship, remarks from Sheriff Tompkins, and the distribution of certificates to about one–hundred and fifty retirees.
Sheriff Tompkins addressed the room of over two–hundred people, expressing his appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the Department.
“I want you to know, all of you – the folks that are still presently working at the Department and those that have retired – from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate, and Suffolk County appreciates, everything that you have either done, are doing, or are going to do,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “So please give yourselves a hand.”
After his remarks, Sheriff Tompkins joined members of his executive team for the distribution of certificates to the retirees in attendance, occasionally bringing certificates to retirees who were unable to make the trip to the front of the room.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Sheriff Tompkins expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the event.
“I’m very glad we were able to do this and I’m glad the unions put their support behind it,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “We want our retirees to remain a part of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department community and keep them aware of what is going on in the Department. I want them to know that everything they have done for the Department has been recognized and appreciated. Their hard work reminds us of how far the Department has come and helps us to move forward with purpose.”
